One of the best ways to prevent substance abuse and mental health issues is through events that offer education. National Health Education Week 2018 is an initiative that has been around since 1995, and their goal is education and awareness. Not only is the week dedicated to helping adults understand various health issues, but it’s for young people as well. Many young people turn to substances due to not properly taking care of their mental and physical health.
National Health Education Week 2018 for Communities
A major part of National Health Education Week 2018 is to get communities more involved with knowing about mental and physical health. The Society for Public Health Education (SOPHE), who runs National Health Education Week, partners with organizations such as the CDC. They strive to help communities understand how crucial it is to be involved with helping one another to decrease health risks. By having a better understanding of mental and physical health risks, people are more likely to make the right choices.
One of their goals is to expand the way schools treat health education because this is where young people spend most of their time. Right now, schools put a major focus on physical health, but there’s not much focus on mental health. Due to the latest research, people can understand how physical health can help decrease symptoms of mental illness. Mental illness is not only the leading cause of addiction, but it often begins between the ages of 14 and 24 years old.
Some of the most common forms of mental illness people struggle with include the following:
- Depression
- Anxiety
- ADHD
- Borderline Personality Disorder
- PTSD
National Health Education Week 2018 Helps Emotional Regulation
Thoughts, feelings, and emotions can all lead to poor mental health in young people, but they can lead to a great life as well. One of the main issues is that young people have poor emotional regulation due to the way the brain develops. There are many cases in which mental health treatment isn’t necessary when young people have the proper tools. National Health Education Week provides many resources for young people as well as families to help young people begin to learn how to manage their emotions.
